Research into exercise-induced lymphocyte apoptosis is a relatively new area of interest. The number of manuscripts published in PubMed peaked in 2005 and has declined in recent years. Possible reasons for this decline may include a lack of perceived relevance and some investigations that have questioned whether the phenomenon occurs. We suggested that research should continue to focus on this topic, as technological improvements may allow for more precise measurements in the future. Finally, it is possible that this line of research may establish a mechanistic link between the benefits of exercise and a reduction in many observed chronic diseases.
