Stress exposure affects the function, quality and duration of an organism's life. Stressors such as infections can trigger inflammation and activate the immune response, which in turn protects the organism by eliminating the pathogen. While many aspects of the immune system's functioning are well understood, the molecular, structural and physiological events mediated by the centrosome remain enigmatic. Here we discuss recent advances in the role of the centrosome in the stress response during inflammation and the potential benefits of the centrosome as a stress sensor for the organism.
