Frequency and timing of antenatal screening and their impact on neonatal mortality in the EAG states of India

Rishabh Gupta and Bedanga Talukdar

The aim of the study is to examine the association between frequency of antenatal care and neonatal mortality in EAG states and to explore the relationship between timing of first antenatal care in the first trimester and neonatal mortality in EAG states of India. The study uses data from the third round of National Family Health Survey NFHS-3. Timing of first antenatal care and relative number of antenatal care attended by women are examined separately. Logistic regression is used to find an association between continuity, timing of antenatal care attended and neonatal birth outcome. The results explain the significant association between mothers who received 4-9 antenatal care visits and lower risk of neonatal mortality. Mothers who received antenatal care from the first trimester had the lowest pregnancy outcomes and neonatal mortality.
