Neonatal nursing can be a subset of medical care for newborns up to 28 days after birth. The term "neonatal" comes from "neo," "new," and "natal," "relating to birth or origin." Neonatal nursing requires a high level of skill, dedication, and emotional strength as nurses care for newborns with a variety of problems ranging from premature birth, birth defects, infections, cardiac malformations, and surgical problems.
