Newborn = the first 24 hours of life; neonate = the first 28 days after birth; infant = the first year of life. A transitional period for the baby and therefore also for the family. Survival now occurs extrauterine, which is a physiological challenge. Life tasks at birth: independent breathing, transition from lethal to neonatal circulation, establishment of early nutrition, temperature and glucose control, and changes in fluid balance.
