Biofuel production from biomass is a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Biomass is a renewable source as compared to a fossil fuel that is expected to be depleted. Microalgae are known to be able to grow on any land where no other crops can grow and can produce biomass all year round. The biomass could be used to produce biofuels and byproducts without competing with food. Unfortunately, microalgae biorefinery is not commercially viable. High-value byproducts could contribute to the feasibility of biorefinery. There is a need to improve their yield and quality. Algomics is the application of genomic and post-genomic approaches and is considered a powerful tool for better understanding the metabolism and physiology of algal cells. Then the data would be used to develop sustainable strategies to improve the yield and quality of oil and byproducts and a profitable microalgae industry.
